Man Killed in Carnival Fantasy Cruise Ship Fall

by in Personal Injury

A 26-year old man died earlier this year on the Carnival Fantasy, a cruise ship in the Miami-based Carnival Corporation fleet. The accident occurred while the ship was docked in Nassau during a five-day cruise from Charlestown, South Carolina.

The man died the evening of Jan. 27 when he fell from the upper levels of the ship to the lobby. A statement released by the Cruise line said local authorities were notified immediately and boarded the ship to conduct a complete investigation.

The Carnival Fantasy was on a five-day cruise from Charlestown. The ship was supposed to leave Nassau at 3 p.m. that day, but the delay caused by the investigation led to the cancellation of a scheduled trip to Freeport.

Cruise Ship Tragedy

The Costa Concordia, which ran around off the coast of Italy earlier in January, is also part of Carnival Corporation. In that cruise ship tragedy, more than 30 persons of the 4,000 aboard lost their lives. Survivors are learning that Carnival Corporation, the owner of Costa Cruises, has limited liability for the wreck.

According to NBC's Rock Center, families of plane crash victims usually are offered between $2 and $5 million. According to lawyers, this compares to $75,000 which has been offered to those who lost loved ones in the Costa Concordia crash. Lawsuits are pending and the cruise line refrained from commenting on the incident.

The cruise ship was steered too close to a reef off the small island of Giglio, rammed the reef and severely gashed its hull. The luxury liner immediately began to list, preventing lifeboats from being lowered from the damaged side. Some passengers jumped from the boat and swam to shore or were rescued by helicopter.

The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, was accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning the vessel while passengers and crew were still aboard. A judge put the captain under house arrest, but he was later released.
