Yes, at the outset, typically. Future Motion doesn't pay medical providers as treatment happens, even if you believe your Onewheel was to blame. Your bills are typically paid upfront through your health insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, or out of pocket while your claim is still being investigated.
Treatment and legal responsibility are separate issues. Your care happens now, while a product liability claim seeking reimbursement for that care can take much longer to resolve. This distinction surprises a lot of riders who expect the manufacturer to step in immediately after an accident.
What happens to those bills if your claim succeeds? If your case succeeds, medical expenses can become part of the damages you recover from the manufacturer or another responsible party. Your recovery is not always the full amount originally billed, since insurers who already paid your bills may have a right to be repaid from your settlement.
A recall does not change any of this either. Even with the 2023 Onewheel recall covering roughly 300,000 boards across six models, your bills still get paid the same way while your individual claim against Future Motion is evaluated separately from your medical care.
Sorting out who ultimately pays, and how much you actually keep from a settlement, takes someone tracking your bills, your insurance payments, and any reimbursement claims against your case. Our team handles that coordination so your settlement reflects your real losses. Contact us for a free consultation to talk through your Onewheel accident and your medical bills.
