According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles report, there were 227,998 traffic crashes in Florida in 2011, resulting in an average of 625 car crashes each day, a number 3.17% lower compared to 2010. From these vehicle accidents, 2,261 were fatal in 2010 and 2,241 in 2011, resulting in 2,444 deaths in 2010 and 2,400 deaths in 2011. The number of pedestrians killed in fatal car accidents was 499 in 2010 and 497 in 2011. According to the same statistics over the past six years fatalities due to car accidents in Miami,FL have dropped every year since 2005 with 3533 fatalities to only 2,400 in 2011 which is a 32% reduction. On the other hand motorcyclist and passenger fatalities increased between 2010 and 2011 by 18%. The number of fatalities involving teen drivers and passengers had also increased by 7% from 2010 to 2011. Alcohol consumption was the leading cause of 794 fatal car crashes in 2010 and of other 920 fatal car accidents in 2011. The number of drug-related fatal car crashes in Miami has also increased dramatically from 106 in 2010 to 190 in 2011. The highest number of car accidents occurred in Miami-Dade County, Florida resulting in a total of 42,171 car crashes in 2011.
